Remote Full Moon Sabbats
The Wiccan Federation runs a remote Full Moon Sabbat on the day of the Full Moon. Where the moon is full or eclispsed before dawn then the rite takes place the night before.
The remote Full Moon Sabbats are often the first contact that solitary Wiccans have with group practice. Although they are simple in nature they do provide a chance to connect with other Wiccans.
For those who haven't been involved before it can be hard to understand how this event runs so this document has been produced to explain how the event works.
The ritual starts with the lighting of a candle at sunset by the Magister/Magistra of the rite. This is typically done in the South-East of England. Once the ritual has been commenced others will light their candles. The only condition is that you should not light your candle before sunset in your location. This means that there is a feel of the sun setting accross the country.
Once you have lit your candle you should photograph it and put that photo into the Watsapp group that you are in. It will then be shared across the others groups, which provides a chance for everyone to see the altars and candles of Wiccans from around the country. Information related to the specific time of year will typically be provided. At 12.00 p.m. we break for our rituals and there is no communication on the groups after 12.00 until you have completed your ritual. If you are not doing a ritual please wait for someone to finish before adding further comments in the chat.
The ritual that members perform is typically the Drawing Down of the Moon. This is the sharing of the sacrament of cakes and ale or bread and wine. If you are not familiar with this you can do a moon observation or meditation. In any case a video recording of the liturgy used will typically be posted and new members can play it to get a feel for the practice of Wicca.
You can use any colour candle or you can use combinations of candles for example black and wite for polarity, red and blue for life and death or red and white for alchemy. You should also place on your altar something to reflect the moon that you are so if it is the Fruit Moon you should place a piece of native fruit on the altar. During the evening music related to the moon may be played. Members may also chat in the groups.
Members will also post a photo of the moon as it appears from their location. The first sighting of the moon is also recorded through photographing and placing it on Whatsapp.
Around 12.20 when the Magister/Magistra of the ritual has completed the Drawing Down of the Moon there will be a 'candle out' posted which marks the end of the rite.
Sometimes a member may make a video of all the candles and altars and post it in the Whatsapp from where it can be cross posted.
